Lemmings Reloaded

The Lemmings are back on the Commodore 64 — and this time, they mean business.

Lemmings Reloaded is an impressive 2026 tribute to one of the most iconic puzzle games ever created. Based on the legendary Lemmings concept by DMA Design, this unofficial, non-commercial fan project brings the tiny green-haired troublemakers back to the C64 in a remarkably ambitious new production.

Your mission is as simple as ever: get as many Lemmings as possible safely to the exit. The problem? They have absolutely no sense of self-preservation.

Lemmings will happily walk off cliffs, drown, fall into traps or march straight into certain doom unless you intervene. To guide them through each level, you can assign eight classic skills:

Climber, Floater, Bomber, Blocker, Builder, Basher, Miner and Digger.

The challenge comes from figuring out who needs which skill, where, and at exactly the right moment. Skills are limited, time is running out, and saving just enough Lemmings to finish a level is often very different from finding the perfect solution.

More than just a remake

Lemmings Reloaded began as a proof of concept for displaying Lemmings using C64 sprites, but over approximately a year of development it grew into a complete game.

The result pushes the machine surprisingly hard. Levels use their own bespoke graphics and unique character sets, while one of the largest stages — Rendezvous at the Mountain — reportedly fills the available RAM and even plays music from ROM to create a level whose total content exceeds 64 KB.

There are also Bronze, Silver and Gold star ratings to chase. Completing a level gets you further into the game, but getting the best possible result gives experienced players another reason to return and optimize their solutions.

And yes — every Gold rating is achievable.

30 unlockable SID tracks

Progress also unlocks music.

Lemmings Reloaded includes a built-in Jukebox with 30 tracks. Each completed level reveals another tune, giving you another reason to keep those suicidal little creatures alive.

There are even a few Easter eggs hidden throughout the levels.

How to play

Select a skill and then assign it to the appropriate Lemming.

Sounds easy.

It isn’t.

A Builder may create the staircase that saves the entire group. A Blocker can turn a crowd around before disaster. A carefully placed Basher or Miner might open the only route to the exit — while one badly timed command can destroy an otherwise perfect solution.

And when everything has gone catastrophically wrong?

There’s always NUKE.

• + / – – Change Lemming release rate
• P – Pause
• S – Toggle music
• RUN/STOP – Quit

A mouse is the recommended way to play, closely matching the classic Lemmings experience.

A serious C64 production

Lemmings Reloaded isn’t simply a nostalgia exercise. It is the kind of modern C64 project that demonstrates just how much can still be extracted from the machine more than four decades after its release.

If you remember losing entire armies of Lemmings in the early ’90s, you’ll feel at home immediately.

If you’ve never played Lemmings before, here’s the only rule you really need to know:

They will walk into danger.
Your job is to make sure they don’t.
