About Commodore 64 Combat School

Combat School is a multi-event action game released by Ocean Software in 1987. It is the Commodore 64 conversion of Konami’s arcade game of the same name and follows the formula established by classics such as Track & Field and Hyper Sports. Instead of competing in a stadium, however, the player must survive a demanding US Army training programme.

The game features seven different events, including an obstacle course, several shooting ranges, the exhausting Iron Man Race, arm wrestling and a final hand-to-hand fight against the drill instructor. After completing the training, the newly qualified soldier is immediately sent on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages from an embassy occupied by terrorists. Most events must be completed within a strict time limit, while strong performances earn bonus points and additional time for the following challenge.

The gameplay combines rapid joystick movement, precise shooting and quick reactions, making it both challenging and notoriously hard on joysticks. The C64 version is also remembered for its detailed character graphics, smooth scrolling and energetic military-style soundtrack by Martin Galway. Although some events can be frustrating, especially because of the collision detection and high difficulty, Combat School remains an entertaining and varied example of the classic 1980s multi-event genre.
