About Commodore 64 Eureka!

“Eureka! is an interactive text-based Commodore 64 / ZX Spectrum game rooted in European historical settings, divided into five distinct segments that require individual loading and progression. The initial four segments can be tackled in any chosen sequence, but the final segment becomes accessible only upon the completion of its predecessors. (The story was written by Ian Livingstone, a famous English fantasy author.)

The segments unfold as follows:

  1. Prehistoric Europe: This chapter unfolds within a Jurassic era valley, tasking players with escaping the clutches of voracious dinosaurs.
  2. Ancient Rome: Players find themselves ensnared in slavery within ancient Rome, circa the 1st or 2nd century BC, with a goal to break free and clinch victory in a horse race at the Circus Maximus.
  3. Arthurian Britain: Set against the backdrop of medieval Britain during King Arthur’s reign, players work to thwart the malevolent schemes of Mordred.
  4. Wartime Germany: This segment places players in WWII Germany, plotting an escape from a prisoner of war camp to return home.
  5. Modern Caribbean: The narrative culminates in the 1980s Caribbean, where players confront their adversary in his island fortress, aiming to foil his global domination plans.

Entering the Modern Caribbean, the game quizzes players on each prior segment, requiring correct answers to proceed.

The game’s narrative elements might feel familiar, and it operates on a basic command parser allowing for simple verb-object interactions. Visuals include representative images and occasional animations for certain rooms.

A unique aspect of Eureka! is its integration of RPG elements, such as character hit points that fluctuate with injuries or sustenance. A zero hit point count results in character demise.

The game also introduces urgency with time-constrained rooms, compelling swift actions or exits.

Additionally, Eureka! features “arcade game” versions of its five parts, presenting straightforward maze navigation challenges reminiscent of Pac-Man, with the primary variations being in maze designs and graphics.

A notable auditory feature is the incorporation of a Franz Liszt’s Les Préludes theme by the wind at the beginning of the Arthurian Britain segment.”
