About Commodore 64 Microprose Soccer

C64 MicroProse Soccer, developed by Sensible Software and published by MicroProse (known mostly for their war simulation games), offers two distinct soccer simulations: stadium and indoor soccer. The game displays the field from a top-down perspective with smooth scrolling in all directions, and the currently controlled player is indicated by a flickering football shirt. Players can pass or shoot the ball, with shot power increasing the longer the fire button is pressed. The ball’s trajectory can also be curved by moving the joystick left or right. Defensively, players can attempt sliding tackles to steal the ball from opponents. Controlling the goalkeeper becomes active when they appear on-screen, with a button press triggering a jump to block shots.

Indoor soccer introduces fundamental rule changes, such as the ball rebounding off cushions instead of going out of play, and goalkeepers being able to score (unlike in stadium matches where they’re confined to the penalty area).

Goals are replayed in slow motion, allowing for a leisurely review of the scoring play. “MicroProse Soccer” features comprehensive menus for various game customizations, from match duration (2 to 12 minutes) to control details and weather conditions, which can affect gameplay, such as making the ground slippery in rain.

The game offers diverse modes, including a league system where up to 15 players can register and compete, and a World Cup mode that mirrors real-world locations and team strengths (with some random variations). Progress can be saved at any time, and there’s a ‘Name Bank’ for creating club databases, limited to 16 clubs due to memory constraints. This allows for the creation of a personalized league, although not extensive enough to encompass something as large as the entire Premier League.
