About Commodore 64 Project Firestart
Project Firestart is a cinematic survival horror game for the Commodore 64 computer system, released in 1989. Developed by Dynamix and published by Electronic Arts, the game is known for its atmospheric storytelling and tense gameplay.
The game takes place in 2061 when agent Jon Hawking is sent to the research ship Prometheus, which orbits around Titan. His mission is to make contact with the members of Project Firestart, retrieve scientific data, and then destroy the ship.
Upon arriving at the Prometheus, Hawking finds the crew brutally murdered and hostile creatures on board. Through the ship’s science logs, he learns about the genetic engineering program, Project Firestart, which aimed to create a mining species by combining oxen DNA with a new type of fungi. Dr. Arno, one of the scientists, secretly altered the DNA, resulting in uncontrollable and hostile creatures that overran the ship and killed the crew.
Hawking encounters the surviving SIA Agent Annar Kensan and scientist Mary, who are in cryosleep. As the creatures spawn a giant, invulnerable white version of themselves, Hawking must find a way to defeat it using the resources available on the ship and the Firestart scientists’ notes on the genetic flaws in their original organisms.
Project Firestart was praised for its narrative and suspenseful atmosphere, which helped pioneer the survival horror genre. The game featured multiple endings based on player choices and actions, adding depth and replay value.
