Originally developed by Enigma Variations in 1993, Nigel Mansell’s World Championship for the Commodore 64 was set to be a major racing title. Inspired by its NES counterpart, the game featured smooth road routines, qualifying laps, and even a training mode with Nigel Mansell himself. However, development was halted roughly six weeks before completion due to time constraints and commercial concerns, and the C64 version was quietly cancelled.
In early 2025, the full source code and assets were unexpectedly recovered from the Enigma Variations archives, revealing a surprisingly advanced build. Nearly all tracks are present, the core driving engine is in place, and a demo of the title music survives. Although still buggy and incomplete, it shows the clear potential of what could have been one of the C64βs finest racing games.
A huge thanks goes to everyone involved in recovering and preserving this long-lost title. C64 fans can now finally experience a legendary project that was almost lost to time.
