About Commodore 64 Dominion

Dominion is a turn-based strategy game for the Commodore 64 by Roberto Sandri, released on 9 February 2026 by Digital Monastery, the game division of the scene group Hokuto Force. Three factions compete for a randomly generated or Earth-based map. You claim land, build farms, factories and power plants, raise armies and found cities, and the first to control 51% of the territories wins. It is freeware, and you can play it in your browser on this page.

Quick facts

  • Genre: turn-based strategy (territory control, resource management)
  • Author: Roberto Sandri (code, graphics, design, manual)
  • Released by: Digital Monastery / Hokuto Force
  • Released: 9 February 2026, freeware
  • Players: three factions, each human or C64-controlled (1–3 humans, hot-seat)
  • Controls: joystick port 1, joystick port 2 or keyboard (cursor keys + Z), chosen per player
  • Format: D64 disk. The game keeps loading from disk while you play.

This is not a version of the Dominion deck-building card game. It is also unrelated to the 1988 C64 shooter of the same name.

How to win

Be the first player to own 51% of the territories on the map, or wipe the other two players off it. On your turn you can take as many actions as you can afford, then pass the turn. Almost every action costs resources, so your economy decides the war.

Setting up a game

Choose between a random world and a realistic scenario based on a real region of Earth. Scenarios spread resources less evenly, so they are harder on average. For a random world you set:

  • F1 Conformation: Pangea, Continents or Islands (how much of the map is sea)
  • F3 Climate: Variable (beginner-friendly), Arid, Humid, Temperate, Continental or Boreal
  • F5 Prosperity: Poor, Balanced or Rich (chance of bonus resources)
  • F7 Start budget for human players

Press SPACE to confirm. On the next screen, F1 changes flags (leaders), F3 changes colours, F5 sets how many players are human, keys 1–3 switch each player between joystick and keyboard, and F7 starts the game. Turn order is random.

Resources, terrain and leaders

There are three resources: food (bread), materials (a cube) and energy (a light bulb). Grassland gives food, mountains give materials and forest gives energy. Bareland, desert, swamp and sea give nothing on their own. Any terrain can carry a bonus such as a lake, river, fish, livestock, timber, metals, minerals, a geyser or an oilfield.

Each faction is led by a historical figure, and each doubles one kind of production:

  • Queen Victoria: double food from farms
  • Che Guevara: double materials from factories
  • J.F. Kennedy: double energy from power plants

Actions

  • Claim a territory next to your land, or enemy land with no army on it. The cost goes up with every advantage the territory has.
  • Attack costs nothing but needs two of your armies next to the target. The enemy army is destroyed, one of your adjacent armies is lost, and the territory becomes unowned.
  • Improve: build a farm, factory or power plant (one site per territory, each producing every 4 turns), scrap a site, raise an army or found a city. Cities stop rivals from claiming the tiles around them.
  • Trade with computer players only. The better your relations, the better the deals.
  • Scores, Pass turn and Quit game.

Tips from the manual

  • Pick a starting spot that soon gives you some income of every resource. Running dry with no income ends your game.
  • Don’t start too close to another player.
  • Build production sites for whatever you will be short of.
  • Found cities early where you want to block your opponents.
  • Trading helps you, but it helps the computer players too.

Playing in the browser

Dominion is a large, compiled game that keeps reading from the disk, so expect some loading pauses. On this page the site’s virtual joystick starts switched off, so the cursor keys, Z, the F-keys and the number keys all reach the game. Set your player to Keyboard on the player setup screen (key 1 for player 1). Then move with the cursor keys and select with Z.

FAQ

Is this the Dominion card game?

No. It is an original turn-based territory strategy game by Roberto Sandri, with no cards involved.

How do you win Dominion?

Own 51% of the map’s territories, or eliminate both other players.

How many people can play?

Three factions take part. Any of them can be human (1–3 humans, taking turns) or controlled by the C64. Each human chooses joystick port 1, port 2 or the keyboard.

What do the leaders do?

Queen Victoria doubles farm output, Che Guevara doubles factory output and J.F. Kennedy doubles power-plant output.

Can I take enemy land?

Undefended enemy land can be claimed directly. Land with an army on it must first be attacked with two of your armies next to it.

Can I remove the disk after loading?

No. The game keeps using the disk in drive 8 while you play.

Dominion C64 keyboard mapping

When you start a game, each joystick port is automatically turned on. Sometimes this causes a problem as the joystick port is mapped to the keys below. If a game uses these keys, you need to turn off the joystick ports.
