About Commodore 64 4th and Inches

4th & Inches is an American football video game developed by Accolade and released in 1987 for the Commodore 64. Designed and programmed by Bob Whitehead, one of Accolade’s co-founders, the game was praised for its innovative blend of action and strategic play. Unlike previous football games, 4th & Inches introduced a new level of strategy by allowing players to select from various plays. Players could choose a formation and then pick one of five plays, which included a variety of offensive strategies such as draws, curls, sweeps, and long passes. The defensive side also offered multiple tactical options, enabling players to select formations based on their predictions of the opponent’s moves.

During gameplay, players had to select a position to control on offense before the play started and could not switch control during the action. The limited field view sometimes made it difficult to see the full play as it developed. Instead of smoothly scrolling, the game would redraw the visible field area when the controlled player reached the screen’s edge, repositioning the player in a new location. On defense, the controlled player could not be manually changed; instead, the game would automatically switch control to the player closest to the offensive ball carrier whenever the screen was redrawn.
